In the heart of Kent, you will find the wonderful city of Canterbury, a fantastic place to visit for all age and sizes, and all round a wonderful part of the world indeed. Canterbury has so much to offer; whether it’s the historical cathedral, castle and surrounding grounds or more modern attractions, you’re going to come away with a smile on your face.
I popped down to Canterbury recently with my niece, teenage brother and, of course, Nelson (you can check out our video here) to see what was in store for us – here’s some of our favourite moments from our visit to this part of the garden of England.
Dane John Gardens
When we arrived we took a little stroll through the gorgeous Dane John Gardens (dogs must be, understandably, kept on a lead)…
We scaled the windy mountain in the centre to take in those views of the coastline and the cathedral…
Canterbury Cathedral
As soon as we saw the infamous Canterbury Cathedral we knew exactly where our next stop would be…
If you think the exterior of Canterbury Cathedral is impressive, just wait until you go inside…
Historic River Tour
After checking out the cathedral, we took a walk down the high street with all of its bustling shops and cafés. Half way down the high-street we saw the guys from Canterbury River Tours selling historic river cruises. The cruises leave from the bridge and journey through the heart of Canterbury along the River Stour, lined by historic buildings and folk tales to keep everyone entertained. They are dog-friendly and both the kids and I really enjoyed it.
Food!
We had built up quite an appetite from our exploring duties so we went in search of some top-notch nosh. Just around the corner from Canterbury Cathedral we found Salt on Palace Street and boy, had we struck gold. The food was delicious – the chalkboard menu on the wall is ever changing and lists only the finest, seasonal ingredients. We ordered the pizza-like flatbreads and a side of these heavenly goats cheese balls thingys – we cleared our plates without any hesitation!
As you can see, Canterbury has so many things to offer, each one more beautiful than the next – so, what are you waiting for?!
